Eighteen-year-old Joe Vasquez leaves Denver for Texas with Harley Bray, the cow kid who never fit in at their high school. In spite of discovering there’s another side to Harley’s nature—occasional “withdrawals” from roadside convenience stores, a nefarious skill he teaches Joe—Joe shares Harley’s dream of riding bulls and a life together on the Texas plains outside of Abilene. A life that will hopefully see the fulfillment of another of Joe’s dreams—to become a veterinarian.

When a rank bull kills Harley in a rodeo in Longview, Texas, Joe accepts an offer from another bull rider, Shane Thorpe, to partner up and ride the circuit together. The problem is that the blond-haired, blue-eyed Shane found Jesus a long time ago, and he’s torn between his faith and his attraction to Joe. As they make their way across Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona to their final stop on the circuit at the National Western Rodeo in Denver, Joe bides his time for what he hopes will be a relationship with Shane as fulfilling as the one he’d had with Harley. His hopes for the future, however, are challenged along the way when he discovers that his “withdrawals” have captured the attention of a dedicated Texas Ranger.

States of Love Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.

This was a different book, that I never quite got into. The MC are amateur rodeo cowboys, riding bulls. Joe and his partner Harley travel the circuit together. Neither one of them making much money from riding bulls, which leads them to withdrawing cash from various locations. Then one day, Harley is killed by a rank bull. Joe doesn't know what to do without him. He is pondering his life while at the Yellow Rose Saloon, and he meets Shane Thorpe.

Shane, he is everything a southern boy should be, kind, respectful, hard-working, and God fearing. He respects his elders, goes to church, prays for guidance, and listens to his mama. The only thing he does wrong is have these feelings or desires every now and then, lustfull feelings towards other men. But he is a pro at repentance and self-flaggelation- he knows the only way to save his soul is to avoid those lustfull desires and thoughts. The Bible says so, The Preachers say so, and his Mama says so..so it must be true.

Then he meets Joe. Joe makes him feel ways he knows are wrong. Then he remembers his grandma's wisdom and her live-and-let-live attitude and he wonders, could God really be okay with him loving another man? What kind of God would say loving someone is wrong? As he watches Joe, gets to known Joe, and then sees two other gay men interacting, married and in love - he decides that yes, loving would never be seen as wrong by God. Maybe he can have love in his life and still go to heaven when he dies.

I have to admit I almost stopped reading this book several times. I couldn't fully get into it and I didn't like how the POV jumped all over the place. Not to mention, Shane Thorpe is a character who was very trying .. not so much because he was trying to come to grips with his world shifting. But because he was a wuss. He didn't live his life for himself but rather he lived it to make others happy and protect their perception of him being straight. The way he talked about sleeping with women just because it was what was expected - is in direct contrast to him being a God fearing southern Christian man. I mean what happened to sex outside of marriage - or did it only matter if it was with the same sex? So that was annoying to me - double standards and religious morals that don't match up.

Next, the storyline was pretty dry. The humor, if it was there was pretty bland. I found myself constantly checking to see how much longer was left in the book. This could be totally me, but I could not connect at all with any of the characters.

The heat level on this book is a 1 - if that, very little sexual interaction and then completely vague with a fade to black.

Now If you want to learn the names of cities in Texas and feel like you are traveling up and down the freeways with these two as they travel the circuit - this book is for you. I honestly feel like I drove back and forth across Texas and the central - southwestern United States after reading this book. I have the road rage and everything!

3 generous stars and a very cautious recommendation.
