This book is a chronology of various types of work in which the author was engaged. These involved Commercial Diving, Scallop Diving, Diving Computer Design, Saving Whales, Maine Lobster Fishing, SERE Instructor and Participation in the U.S. Army and Navy Reserves. It is far from dry and boring and will make the reader wonder why this writer has turned out to be so boring in real life. By the author of "Just a Sailor".

Let me preface this review by saying I know the author. I know him and I know the people he talks about in the book. In fact, I'm one of them. OK, that out of the way, let me tell you a few things about the book.It's probably not for everyone. For one thing, it's a diary, written in chronological order, kind of a sequel to the author's first book, "Just A Sailor." So it's not a book with a beginning middle and end. There's no actually story to grab hold of, no arc or plot. The main character isn't a drunken bum on skid row who cleans himself up, discovers the true meaning of life, and rises to financial and social prominence. In "Mud Diving..." the author describes his life after the Navy. He's a guy trying to make ends meet. But his life is by no means ordinary. He was a underwater photographer in the Navy and served in Vietnam as a combat/intelligence photographer with UDT 13. A guy with this kind of background isn't going to come out of the Navy and get a desk job.
From scalloping to lobstering, to working in the clarifier lagoons as a commercial diver, to running an ROV in Pakistan, to serving as a fake communist guard in a POW training facility, Mr. Waterman's story captivates and enthralls. Whereas the technical details in the book helped me to understand the complexities of each job at hand, others may find them a bit overwhelming. My wife had to skip through some of the more technical explanations.
In my opinion, anyone coming out of the Navy as a diver, or anyone coming out of another similar type of intensive underwater training program, will want to read this book. Do you have what it takes to be a commercial diver? Read "Mud Diving..." and then decide.

Great book! I often wondered about the work divers do and it is usually very dangerous, sometimes not at all pleasant. I highly recommend this book.

A great read! Steve tells a story as if he was sitting in your living room. He was probably more comfortable in the water than most of us are on land. Since I live only a few hundred yards from the Spruce Head wharf, the jumping off point for many of his adventures, I can relate to his stories.

Buy this book and read it. The aptly named Steven Waterman has done about all there is to do in the way of earning a living on, in, and under the frigid waters of Maine. This man has accomplished hard, tangible work with dignity and humor under rough conditions, and he has done it while taking no guff whatsoever.
You will be amazed at the variety of things Steven describes in his no-nonsense, conversational way. He swam away from his sinking boat alone and miles from shore, saved at least one whale (it wasn't through use of bumper stickers), saw friends killed in diving accidents, salvaged a seaplane in a nor'easter, was an "enemy soldier" training Navy men to survive and resist torture and interrogation, tackled zero-visibility diving jobs in all manner of squalid places, and much more.
Steven is not one to be a bystander in an emergency. He's a very smart and courageous guy who takes physical action to get things done, often under appalling conditions. If he hears a buddy, or a whale, or a child is in trouble, he quickly figures out the best course of action. He grabs his dive gear, jumps into a boat, aircraft, or pickup truck, speeds to the site, and does his formidable best to put things right.
Much of the book is about vital work that people never see and usually take for granted. If you want to know how part of the Boston Big Dig was dug, how lobsters and scallops get onto your plate, how commercial divers keep dams, power plants, and industrial sites operating, this book explains the underlying technology - and danger - in a clear and interesting manner. I look forward to his next book.
This is a great book that I read over the course of three days.
In the early 90's, I worked for a diving company, so I was able to relate to a lot of what he was saying.
Steve has a great style of writing that is very conversational- I almost felt like he was there telling me the story. This translated into feeling his pain when he experiences loss and happiness when things went well for him.
There is no bragging here, like some of these type of books have. Steve simply tells stories from his perspective. I highly recommend this book.
This book was a GREAT read. Each chapter was like a book in itself, whether mud diving, lobster fishing or saving whales. And all the adventures written, were true life stories and not just fish tales. The characters in the book were many, and I feel that I knew each of them after reading about them. Steven's experiences were suspenseful, and most, very dangerous. Even though the reader may have no knowledge of diving, fishing or operating boats, Steven always had a brief but complete technical explanation, bringing the reader up to speed. The book brought out many emotions and feelings; sadness, empathy, laughter and sheer exhaustion at completed tasks. I can't compare this book to many others, I just know, for me, it was a powerful and insightful group of stories.
I have to give this book five stars since once I started reading it I couldn't stop. Mr. Waterman has had some great adventures and writes in a manner that you feel as if you were a participant in these adventures. His writing style creates a visual picture as if you were looking at a move. As a caveat, I have to say that my review in likely predicated to some degree on my personal interest in boating and diving. It is possible that someone with little interest in boating or diving might not find the book interesting.
